The Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS) Directive 2002/95/ EC of January 27, 2003, by the European Parliament and Council, affects all participants in the electrical and electronic industries.

The RoHS Directive specifically addresses the reduction of use and ultimate elimination of the following substances:

Cadmium, Hexavelant Chromium, Lead, Mercury, PBBs, PBDE

These materials must be replaced by other substances by July 1, 2006. The use of mercury, lead, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium will still be allowed under specific circumstances, or certain end product applications. These exceptions for the four materials are detailed in the Directive's Annex.
